$6 million delivered for Elsternwick park, improve beach health
Joint media release with Minister for the Environment the Hon Sussan Ley MP
"The Morrison Government is delivering $6 million to support the city of Bayside’s restoration of Elsternwick park as an urban sanctuary for residents and wildlife, and clean water outflows into Port Phillip to improve local beach health," said Federal Liberal Member for Goldstein, Tim Wilson, today.
Today the Morrison Government delivered an additional $5 million to support the Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve project, in addition to the $1 million already delivered in 2021.
“At the last election I said I’d fight to clean the water into Port Phillip from Elster creek, and delivering $6 million to support the new Elsternwick park wetlands will significantly improve the outflows and boost the water quality and health of our local beaches," Mr Wilson said.
“The city of Bayside has nominated the restoration of Elsternwick park as a priority project that will act as an environmental gateway into our community and I am proud to deliver Federal support for critical local infrastructure, particularly to protect our local environment," Mr Wilson said.
The Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve Project includes:
• 13 hectares of new parkland on the border of the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira and Port Phillip.
• 5.4 hectares of new wetland habitat with 30,000 indigenous plants.
• Wetlands that will treat Elster Creek outflows into Port Phillip improving the health of our local beaches.
The total cost of the project is $20 million and has currently received $6 million of support from the Federal government.
“We are backing local communities to take practical environmental action,” Minister Ley said.
“This project underlines the important role of urban environments in attracting native species and in maintaining the health of our waterways. It shows how communities across the country can make a difference."
Mr Wilson said the funding also showed that the Morrison Government understands the critical role of healthy local parks and Port Phillip to the well-being, of local residents.
“We are proud to continue delivering support as part of our local plan for Goldstein," Mr Wilson said.
