Air New Zealand flights to take off

A new direct flight service between Auckland and Hobart will begin at the end of next month, thanks to a deal struck between the Morrison and Gutwein governments.

The Morrison Government has invested in Australian Border Force, Australian Federal Police investigators and biosecurity officers to make Hobart airport an international gateway.

Assistant Minister Jonno Duniam said today’s announcement puts Tasmania at the front of the queue of tourist destinations.

“This is the shot in the arm that Tasmania’s tourism operators desperately need as they recover from the impacts of the pandemic,” Assistant Minister Duniam said.

“We expect Hobart airport to take around 30,000 international travellers each year, which will see tourists supporting local tourism, accommodation and hospitality businesses.

“This is a giant leap towards Tasmania having a truly international airport, and it gives the state an opportunity to prove it can be done with success.

“Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart are already key-regions under the Morrison Government’s half-price flight program, and with New Zealand visitors added to the list, Tasmania’s tourism industry can be assured it will be supported.”
