Harnessing hydrogen in Rockhampton, Queensland

Joint media release with the Member for Flynn, Ken O'Dowd MP

The hydrogen industry in regional Australia is getting a boost thanks to support from the Liberal National Government.

The Liberal National Government will provide up to $1.25 million through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to Stanwell Corporation Limited to fund a feasibility study for a renewable hydrogen demonstration project at Stanwell Power Station in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Stanwell’s $5 million project aims to show how hydrogen can be utilised to create a cleaner way to produce electricity through the installation of a 10MW (or larger) hydrogen demonstration plant at the power station.

Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said it’s critical that the Government gives the hydrogen sector a boost to help Australia realise its potential to be a world leader in hydrogen production which will grow jobs and regional economies.

“The Australian Government is committed to developing a sustainable and commercial hydrogen industry and harnessing this invaluable resource to bring down energy prices and reduce emissions,” Minister Taylor said.

“The Government will continue to encourage world-leading R&D in new hydrogen applications and we know this region has great potential for a booming hydrogen industry.

“Hydrogen exports could be worth around $11 billion a year in additional GDP and generate 7,600 new jobs by 2050, many in regional Australia.”

Federal Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd MP welcomed the announcement saying the study is a great opportunity for the local economy.

“I will welcome any development that will generate jobs and growth for the area,” Mr O’Dowd said.

“With the hydrogen industry still new to Australia, the feasibility into Stanwell Power Station will provide valuable insight into its growing potential.”

The announcement supports the National Hydrogen Strategy, released last November, which outlines actions for the development of a world-leading hydrogen industry that offers enormous benefits for our economy.

Today’s announcement adds to the over $500 million that the Australian Government has committed since 2015 to developing a clean and innovative hydrogen sector in Australia.
