Thank you, Dr Cathy Foley
Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley AO PSM, concludes her term today.
Dr Foley was appointed Chief Scientist in January 2021 after a lengthy career at Australia’s national science agency, the CSIRO.
Bringing together Australia’s science and research community, Dr Foley played a crucial role helping the country confront a once in a generation pandemic.
The work done to provide rapid response scientific analysis and advice was critical.
As Chief Scientist she helped steer Australia’s National Science and Technology Council, which gives independent advice to the Prime Minister and Government on matters of science.
During the term of this government, Dr Foley led an extensive national conversation to refresh the National Science and Research Priorities and helped to elevate recognition of First Nations knowledge systems.
This was achieved through a comprehensive consultation process involving Australia’s science community and the broader community, helping update the priorities that guide industry and academic effort for the first time in close to a decade.
She has been a fierce advocate for women in STEM, encouraging more women to follow pathways into jobs and education within the sector.
Dr Foley has been a great champion of engaging and uplifting interest in science among young people and students across Australia.
Among Dr Foley’s many accomplishments as Chief Scientist, of particular note, is her contribution to the development of Australia’s first National Quantum Strategy.
Her series of ‘Quantum Meets’ conferences across the country helped different sectors of the economy prepare for the arrival of critical frontier technologies.
Recognising her contributions and experience the Government has appointed Dr Foley to the Board of the CSIRO for a three-year term, to commence in the new year once her tenure as Australia’s Chief Scientist ends on 31 December 2024.
