Government supporting crucial Wannon Industry

22 August 2017

Joint media release with the Member for Wannon, the Hon Dan Tehan MP

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan has promoted the diversity of industry in Wannon to the Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Senator Arthur Sinodinos, on a tour of the region.

Minister Sinodinos and Mr Tehan visited Australia’s first on-farm abattoir at Koallah, the Fonterra dairy operation at Cobden, Sun Pharmaceuticals manufacturing site at Port Fairy and the Portland Aluminium Smelter.

Mr Tehan said: “Wannon is home to a diverse range of industries that are all essential to our community because of the jobs and economic activity they create.

“In January, I was at the smelter with Prime Minister Turnbull announcing a rescue package that saved the smelter and 2000 jobs that went with it.

“Eight months later and Victoria’s largest exporter is going strong and driving not just the Portland economy, but the Victorian economy as well.”

Minister Sinodinos said: "The seat of Wannon is home to some of the countries most advanced manufacturing plants with a strong global outlook.

"I am committed to listening to the competitive challenges facing industry, in particular around skills and energy, and using the levers of government to help them meet those challenges moving forward."
