New national simplification initiative to make it easier to get on with doing business and creating jobs

Joint media release with the Minister for Innovation, Industry and Science, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, and the Assistant Minister for Innovation, Industry and Science, the Hon Craig Laundy MP.
The Turnbull Government has struck a landmark agreement with state and territory governments for a new National Business Simplification Initiative – which will reduce the complexity of regulation for businesses and make dealings with government easier.
Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Greg Hunt chaired a meeting of representatives from state and territory industry portfolios to accelerate work already underway in some areas and identify new opportunities to simplify the operating environment for businesses.
“The National Business Simplification Initiative will help businesses save time and money, allowing them to focus on their businesses and families rather than on coping with overly complex government processes and regulations,” Minister Hunt said.
“By making it simpler to do business, we’re helping existing businesses to grow and removing the barriers to new business creation, which in turn allows innovation to flourish and most importantly, creates more jobs.”
“Through this initiative, we are taking a two-pronged approach to improving the business environment. Firstly, we are tackling the burden of unnecessary regulation, particularly where there is duplication across federal, state and local government levels.”
“Secondly, we will work to improve access to government information and services for business by providing them simply, in one place and through streamlined service delivery.”
Work is already underway on several projects that will see the Turnbull Government working with state and territory governments to simplify regulation and streamline services.
“As an example of why simplification is needed, it currently takes up to 18 months to set up a café in New South Wales. People need to complete up to 48 forms and comply with up to 75 different regulations across different levels of government,” Assistant Minister Laundy said.
“Improving conditions for business is a key priority to support a strong economy, a strong budget and growth in productivity and jobs.”
