Final investment decision for Adani Carmichael mine
5 June 2017
Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Senator Matt Canavan said the final investment decision for the Adani Carmichael mine would be a game-changer for the resources sector in Northern Australia.
Today Adani announced its board had approved the investment in the Carmichael project in the Galilee Basin.
“This is a sign of confidence for the resources sector and a sign of confidence for Northern Australia,” Minister Canavan said.
“It is especially good news for the communities of Central and North Queensland, who will benefit directly from jobs that will be created in the construction and operation of the mine.
“The Adani Carmichael project is a game-changer for the North. The green light for this project could be the first step to open a new resources basin in Australia, creating more than 16,000 jobs in several mines.
“All Australians have the resources sector to thank for ongoing jobs, regional investment and export revenue.
“Just as it has in the Hunter Valley, the Pilbara, and in the Bowen and Surat Basins in Queensland, this new investment in the resources sector will create long-term jobs and the regional investment that keeps local towns thriving.
"Adani has already shown a clear commitment to regional Australia, today officially opening its Townsville headquarters. It has also signed local supply contracts with Austrak in Rockhampton and Arrium in Whyalla.
“The final investment decision is independent of the NAIF assessment of a concessional loan for the North Galilee Basin Rail Project. This independent assessment will continue.”
