Clever roof solution presents new opportunities
13 June 2014
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry, Bob Baldwin, today officially unveiled a new renewable energy solution that combines steel roofing with cutting-edge thin-film solar panels in the Sydney suburb of Glebe.
“BlueScope has replaced the ageing roof on this house with the first integrated PV thermal system in Australia,” Mr Baldwin said.
“The PV panels will power the home, while an innovative thermal duct system warms and cools air to supplement air conditioning.
“In addition to existing residential applications, this intuitive new technology also has potential to be used in new residential, commercial and industrial constructions.”
Mr Baldwin congratulated BlueScope for developing this Australian-first technology.
“BlueScope is well placed to see this world-leading technology through to commercialisation,” Mr Baldwin said.
“The roofing systems have been specifically designed for Australia’s climate and buildings, to ensure effectiveness and reliability.
“This a great display of Australian ingenuity and an example of industry leveraging government funding to make breakthroughs that may lead to advanced manufacturing and export opportunities.”
The project is supported by $2.3 million funding from the Australian Government through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency towards a total cost of $5 million.
