ANSTO BOARD STRENGTHENED BY NEW APPOINTMENTS

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, today announced the appointments of Professor John Hearn and Professor David Copolov, as members to the Board of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

"Both appointees are highly qualified and will make a significant and valuable contribution to the ANSTO Board.

"Professor Hearn has extensive experience as a scientific advisor to the Australian Government and has served on a variety of international and Australian steering groups and committees.

"Professor Copolov possesses considerable corporate management expertise and has also provided scientific advice to the Government over many years," Senator Carr said.

“The significant skills and attributes these two new members bring to the ANSTO Board will contribute to the organisation's effective corporate governance and ensure that the full potential of the OPAL reactor is realised.

"The Government is absolutely committed to ANSTO's ongoing role and is keen for the organisation to further develop research and commercial opportunities.”

Professor Hearn is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and Professor of Physiology at the University of Sydney.  In 2001 he was granted the Australian Centenary Medal for outstanding service to science and to the Australian Government as a scientific advisor.

In 2004 Professor Copolov was appointed Senior Advisor, Office of the Vice Chancellor at Monash University after 19 years as the Director of the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria.

"I congratulate Professors Hearn and Copolov on their appointments and look forward to their contributions to the Board as it positions ANSTO to build on its reputation as an internationally recognised centre for nuclear science and technology research," Senator Carr said.
